This Easter, make a homemade spring basket for a preschooler. Chocolate, egg decorating, crafts and Easter books come together in this gift that will delight children.

This Easter, create an egg-themed gift basket that is sure to please small children. This basket will help families and preschoolers get ready for Easter by decorating the house, starting spring flowers, and reading hilarious stories about Easter escapades.

Small Amounts of Good Quality Chocolate

Choosing chocolate? To prevent chocolate overload, buy less chocolate that is higher quality. Preschoolers love fancy chocolates made in the shape of bunnies, or chocolate eggs filled with cream candy. There are many locally-made chocolates and fair trade, organic chocolates in all possible varieties. Remember to get a few little eggs to hide around the house!

An Easter Book for Preschoolers

The Most Wonderful Egg in the World by Helme Heine [Aladdin Books,1983] is a hilarious book that features three hens. Each hen vies to make the most wonderful egg so that she can become the royal hen. The book is simple and reinforces that differences are not always a bad thing.

Another Easter favourite is The Great Big Especially Beautiful Easter Egg [Mulberry Books, 1990]. James Stevenson’s tall tale begins with a man talking about his childhood Easter celebrations. To find the best Easter egg for his special friend, he uses a wishbone to wish himself to the mountains, where a strange creature makes amazing eggs.

An Egg Decorating Kit

Buy a commercial egg-decorating kit with dyes and stickers, or make dyes using common household materials. Make sure that there are lots of white eggs on hand in case some of them break. While blown eggs are fancy and last a long time, boiled eggs tend to be easiest for preschoolers to hold and decorate without crushing or dropping them.

Flower Seeds for Spring Blooms

Celebrate the beginning of spring with a package of flower seeds! Easter is a good time to start seeds indoors in preparation for spring gardens. Nasturtiums are a good choice. They have edible flowers and are very simple to start. Buy a clear container so that preschoolers can watch the seeds put down roots and sprout out of the soil.

Easter Eggs Filled With Surprise Gifts

Empty plastic eggs are easily available around Easter. Fill them with playdough, stickers, flubber or silly putty. Playdough also makes pre-filled eggs in little nests for Easter gifts – a treat for any preschooler!

Easter Craft Supplies

With a supply of white tacky glue, googly eyes, white and pastel felt and a good selection of pompoms, preschoolers can go wild making Easter creatures. White pompoms make excellent bunnies, yellow pompoms make chicks, and colourful felt is ideal for creating felt flowers for springtime. Go heavy on the glue in any craft kit, and add glitter and beads for extra decorating fun.

This Easter, go beyond chocolate to create a special Easter basket. Begin with some Easter books that feature eggs. Involve preschoolers in home decorating with an Easter egg kit and craft supplies. Get them excited about springtime blossoms with seeds that they can sprout. And yes, buy small amounts of high quality chocolate – no Easter is complete without a chocolate egg!
